The Lord is my Shepherd: I shall not want.
He maketh me to lie down in green pastures.
He leadeth me beside the still waters.
I don’t know that there has ever been a more peaceful and calming passage written. I think of a young child who is pointing out their daddy to a classmate. “See, that is MY daddy”. Proud is that child of their daddy who takes care of them and protects them. The child never worries about whether they will have food to eat when they are hungry or water to drink when they are thirsty.
The term shepherd is not a very pretty word for or Lord but it is an affectionate one used here by the author David. You see David was a dedicated shepherd as he watched over his father’s sheep. He battled against wolves, lions and even bears that stocked the defenseless sheep. Because of his willingness to suffer for the safety of the sheep he could associate with the love the Lord has for us.
He maketh me to lie down in green pastures.
He leadeth beside the still waters.
He gives me a chance to rest in this crazy world and even feeds me as he watches over me. Then as the day comes to a quiet close He leads me down to the safe waters. The slow moving waters, the shallow waters where I can drink deep the refreshing water that he has chosen for me. If we review these words that were chosen so carefully by David we will see that we are required to do nothing but follow Him. We must simply have faith that He has our best interests in mind.
Lately while I am driving I have kept the radio off and enjoyed the silence. It seems to be a rare time today when we don't have a cell phone, an Ipod or our jobs making noise in our ear. Seek out the green pastured and the still waters. Maybe you will catch a whisper from the Shepherd.
Many times I have rested in silence and tried to tell the Lord how grateful I am to be one of His sheep. I challenge you to get alone and sit in a quiet space and drink in the peaceful waters of His presence. Drink deep from His love for you, and see if He doesn’t make himself known to you.
Psalm 23
Remember to always ride the narrow road and stop in and see us again.
