I watch as the temperatures rise and melt the snow that has covered the grass for months. How is it that the grass can withstand the smothering weight and the icy grip of the temperatures without the life giving sun. I know what it is to walk daily under the smothering weight of sin's conviction. I have felt the icy grip of a life in darkness. I believe many of us have.
I think of King David who one spring fell to the temptation of lust in 2 Samuel 11. The grip of sin grew tighter as King David lied to cover up his sin, and then ordered the husband of his lover be killed in battle. He felt he had to do something because his lover had become pregnant with his child. His days grew darker. And he didn't realize he was in the darkness until he was exposed by a ray of light that came not to destroy him, but to restore him. I often find myself feeling like I get caught to be punished. But I can see through David's experience, that I am caught in my sin so that I can be restored.
God loves me so much that he chastises me. He loves me so much that he makes a way out of my sin. Sure the pain still lingers and the scars are always there. Even the consequences will continue to play out. But somehow God's mercy and grace melts away the contract that sin has on me. The Son of Grace bathes me once again with His love. You see, God sent His son to forever melt the cold separation of sin and forever blanket us with his love. He never makes the decision to separate himself from us. We make the decision to separate ourselves from him.
The first son of David and Bathsheba that was conceived in sin, died after only a few days. God proved his restoration with David by giving him a son that would grow to be the wisest man to ever live. This second son that David and Bathsheba had was Solomon. Solomon would grow to be the wisest of all men. Yet he had a weakness. The weakness was lust, just like his father. The bible tells us that our sins will visit up to the third generation.
One day, sin's winter will return to my heart and with it the stinging cold and the lonely darkness. The burden of conviction will fall and lay heavy on me. However, Christ will give us the wisdom to recognize and avoid such difficult times if we will but ask him for it. So I pray that the next time the winter of temptation visits, I am wise enough to run to God for warmth and protection.

The warmth of the Son is soooo very nice in the spring, and the life that comes with it is a welcome visitor.
Remember to always ride the narrow road and stop in and visit us again.
Larry.
